Florian Schuhmann’s grower-project “Quantum” has to do with quality rather than scale. Schuhmann is currently farming less than four hectares in total with no plans to grow at all. It’s worth noting that geographically, Florian’s hometown of Maissau is only 25 miles to the Czech border – while it is well over 40 miles to Vienna. Thus we have an Austrian estate with a sensibility, well, that isn’t stereotypically Austrian. It’s a bit trite and too easy to say the style is more “eastern European,” but at the same time these wines sure as hell ain’t from the Wachau.
